After months of careful planning, NL Williams & Beaver Bridges have completed the refurbishment of the Meole Footbridge (Shrewsbury), restoring a vital piece of local infrastructure and ensuring its safety and reliability for years to come.
First things first
With structures of this age and condition, our first task was to blast clean the structure to remove the existing coating system and expose any potential repairs. This, along with the removal of the timber substructure and plywood panels, exposed some vital repairs that were rectified and repaired by Beaver Bridge’s fabrication facility in Wigan.

A coating system designed to last
With the existing coating system removed and the steelwork prepared, the bridge was blast cleaned to an SA2 EN ISO 8501-1 standard and coated with a three-coat, high-build surface-tolerant protective coating system – providing long-term anti-corrosion protection.
A new colour scheme
As per the designer’s request, the bridge was repainted with a new colour scheme, immortelle yellow and magic blue on alternating diagonal bracing and parapet panels.

New Timber Stucture & Permadeck Timber Panels

Encapsulated panels, designed to last
Permadeck Timber panels are an encapsulated, structural plywood panel designed for heritage structures with heavy footfall. Manufactured from the highest quality 12-layer, Finnish plywood, treated with Permagrip PU anti-slip surfacing and encapsulated in a proprietary epoxy and polyurethane system – Permadeck Timber Panels are designed to offer a robust and durable anti-slip decking surface for over 20 years.
